If you want to switch to green lifestyle, the first place you need to start with is your home. Living green is very ‘in’ right now and that’s more or less a gift to nature. So go ahead – get rid of all your toxic cleaners right now and start your green life.
The EPA has estimated that the air indoors is about a 1000 times more polluted than outdoors and a great percent of that pollution is chemically induced. But green cleaners, on the other hand, are not only healthier to the environment, but also reduce the possibility of skin, eyes and lungs irritations to a minimum without being any harder to use.
Have you asked yourself how healthy and green your environment is? Yes, I know that life today is busy and has put a lot of pressure on you, so you have no time to think about that. But the health of your home is of crucial importance, as it directly reflects on your health. So, since I know how valuable time is for you, I’ve summarized into 7 easy steps the way to finding good green cleaning products.
- Read the back of the packaging. Does the product contain toxic ingredients? Is it biodegradable? If the answer is yes, than this is a member of the green cleaning products family. Oh, and what is biodegradable? Well, the longer something takes to degrade, the more harmful it is to the environment. Biodegradable products are faster than others.
- Look for the sign of Green Seal on the packaging. It is the company, which provides science-based environmental certification standards for green cleaning products. Some other organizations that value and have high standards for cleaning products are: Trans Fair, Forest Stewardship Certified, Greenguard, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Energy Star and Leaping Bunny.
- Does the product contain chlorine bleach? If so, than when mixed with the waste water it will create toxic chemicals, which will pollute both air and land. To switch to green living – don’t use products, containing chlorine bleach for your wash.
- And how about petroleum? Petroleum-based solvents are flammable and toxic when you inhale them. Try pine oil or citrus – they are renewable, non-toxic and friendly both to nature and your health. What’s more, they clean just as effectively as the chemically based.
- The next thing to check is the pH-balance of you products. Products with too high or too low pH are dangerous and can burn your skin if you accidentally spill them. The best solution is neutral pH ( 7.0 ) – it’s harmless.
- Check too see if the packaging is made of recycled products. Some products are recycled and used again, so that our impact on nature is reduced.
- And last but not least, check if the product has been tasted on animals or if it contains animal ingredients. If it does – be a green life follower and don’t use it.
To green your lifestyle is easy. Avoiding chemically based cleaners and using green products instead benefits our health, our planet.
